Having a bathroom or kitchen finished to a high standard really sets the benchmark by which your whole house is judged. In fact it is no coincidence that these are the first two rooms of the house that are changed when new owners move in. A badly tiled bathroom or kitchen really makes a house look that little bit tatty. Same goes if they are not tiled at all. But it is expensive to hire someone to do it.

So to learn how to lay ceramic tiles is something that can save and make you heaps of money if you buy or sell your house or simply want to improve the stock of your house. Having ceramic tiles installed will transform any bathroom, kitchen or patio giving it a smooth tough and care free style that no other material can emulate.

Being able to carry out the laying of tiles is a job that is often referred to experienced professionals as there are many aspects to tiling and the work you need to do.

Tiles are permanent materials that will last a long time unlike other flooring and wall materials like linoleum and laminate. These may be cheaper to buy and easier to install but laminate and linoleum simply do not have the same polished look of ceramic tiles, and would need to be replaced more often especially if your house has pets and children living in it as well.

There are many aspects to tiling that you need to consider before you can say you are able to carry out this work which not many DIY books do not convey properly and these include the following:

  • Knowing how to cut the tiles correctly. You only have one shot at this and if you do it wrong you cannot put it right and will cost you money.

  • Cutting around Faucets, Jams and Wall plugs is a task you need to be able to do confidently and at speed.

  • Knowing when and how to use Tiler Nippers. Again it is costly if you do it wrong and you have only one shot at it.

  • Making sure you size your joints right unless you want your tiling work to look sloppy and unprofessional.

  • Installing backer boards seems easy but it is not. This is also something you need to make sure that you do correctly.

  • You do not want to mix and spread your ceramic adhesives badly. Again this could cost you money if done wrong.

  • When you grout your ceramic tiles you are left with several choices. Pick the wrong one and you could end up with pinholes and smudges ruining your tiles.
  • In short you need to be able to prepare yourself properly before tiling your surfaces. If you simply go ahead and buy the tiles and materials and think it is just a matter of fitting them into place like you would wall paper then you could be setting up yourself for a costly disappointment. However there are good and very affordable courses that teach you how to lay ceramic tiles that can help you achieve that professional look you always wanted minus the cost.
