Exploding Trivets - What Tile Not To Use As A Hot Plate

Author: home-lover  |  Category: Home Improvement

If you have ever lived through a tile or marble project and were well on your way to recovery, you may have thought you would like to keep a piece or two of the tile that was used for the installation and use it as a hot plate to protect your counter top.

This is a great idea, but there are some things you should be aware of for your family’s safety.

Some tile materials explode when they reach a certain temperature!
Mostly the problem lies with tile made from cement or clay that has not been baked in a kiln.
Do not use these as a hot plate, they can actually explode and cause serious damage to the nearest victim.

Clay and cement tile products that have not been fired in a kiln, like porcelain and ceramic tiles are, may have air pockets present in the mixture.
When the material is dry and shipped off to be sold to the consumer those air pockets are still there.
When a very hot pan or skillet is placed on the trivet that air pocket can heat up, the gas expands and boom!
I was at a cook out a few years back and the barbeque chef had the grill minus the support legs burning away on top of a concrete slab.
He was just taking the hot dogs and hamburgers off of the grill and KABOOM, one of those nasty air pockets again.

So, if you don’t want to have a hot dog implanted in your ear or worse get a serious injury, stick to tiles like granite for your hot plate trivet.
Granite is born of igneous rock. Another words think volcanoes. This material has been through the fire test.
Porcelain tiles are also ok or dark brown kiln fired ceramic.
If you want to bake bread or pizza on an old fashion baking stone you can purchase one that is designed for this purpose and not have to worry about blowing your oven up.

Happy and safe cooking,
Thomas
